PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONALS

Money, banking, TWINT & taxes

The biggest adjustment is often not the currency; it is the Swiss payment/admin rhythm: QR bills, direct debits, TWINT and taxes that depend on your residence status.

Bank account

Banks differ in onboarding requirements, especially before a permit card arrives. Bring passport/ID, proof of address and employment/residency documents; compare fees rather than assuming the biggest bank is best.

TWINT

TWINT is widely used for person-to-person payments, shops, parking and small purchases. Most newcomers set it up once they have a compatible Swiss bank/phone arrangement.

Bills

Swiss invoices often use QR bills. Your banking app can scan the code; always verify recipient and amount before payment.

Taxes

Many foreign employees without a C permit are taxed at source (Quellensteuer), but individual situations vary and some people still need or choose a tax return. Use cantonal guidance or professional advice for your exact case.

The bills people forget

Health insurance is generally paid separately from salary deductions. Other recurring items can include Serafe household broadcasting levy, household/liability insurance, transport passes and municipal or utility charges depending on your setup.

Our rule: when something can change — forms, fees, eligibility, schedules or provider requirements — use the source link rather than a screenshot or copied checklist.
