Spring
Start low. The city can feel like spring while Alpine trails still have snow.
The very Zurich tradition with guilds, the Böögg and a children's parade. Worth understanding before you suddenly see a snowman being burned.
What it is →Panoramic views without heading into the high Alps. Close to Zurich, family-friendly and a good early-season choice.
See the route →Train out, lake and old town; return by boat when the timetable suits. Add the Badi once swimming weather arrives.
Plan it →Summer
Zurich's superpower: finish work and be in the water minutes later.

First: what is a Badi?
Badi is the Swiss catch-all for a public swimming area — a river swim, lake bath or outdoor pool. And yes, swimming in the Limmat is a normal Zurich summer activity.
Use established entry and exit points, follow posted status/safety information, and don't treat moving water like a pool. Oberer Letten is for swimmers only; Unterer Letten also has non-swimmer and family facilities.
Classic 400m Limmat swim. Central and social. No child/non-swimmer area.
Current status →100m river channel plus non-swimmer pool, paddling pool and playground.
Current status →Sand beach, non-swimmer lake area, paddling pool, playground and diving platforms.
Details & prices →For paid City of Zurich indoor/outdoor baths, the current adult single-entry price is CHF 8; youth CHF 6, children CHF 4. Some river/lake baths are free.
Current city prices →*Prices checked Sep 2026. Always use the linked current-price/status page before you go.
Don't just jump into the Limmat anywhere.
Use established bathing areas and marked entry/exit points. River current is real. Oberer Letten is for confident swimmers only; for children and non-swimmers, choose a Badi with a dedicated shallow/non-swimmer area. Check current opening status and water conditions before going.
8 hikes with views — mostly easy
Difficulty is a guide, not a conditions check. Mountain weather, snow and operating lifts can change quickly — check the linked route before leaving.
Autumn
Good hiking can continue; then the fog arrives and Zurich becomes an excellent base for culture, spas and traditions.
If your Kita or school asks for a turnip, this is why: children carve Räben into lanterns and join neighborhood/school processions. Dates are local, not one city-wide event.
Use a clear day for vineyard country, Lake Zurich walks or one of the easier panorama hikes above.
Before writing off a grey weekend, check the webcam. Uetliberg and the mountains can be sunny above the Hochnebel.
Uetliberg →Winter
You can ski as a day trip from Zurich. Rent in town for convenience or at the resort if you want less carrying.
Adult day-pass cues checked September 2026 where a clear published price was available. Some resorts use dynamic pricing, so always open the resort link before booking. Rentals are widely available in Zurich and at the resorts.
Don't ski?
Sledding, winter hiking, thermal baths and “go above the fog” trips are the easy alternatives. For a weather-proof option in the city, Hürlimannbad has thermal bathing and a rooftop pool.

Swiss transport products can change the economics of a day out.
Useful if most Zurich-region travel is after the morning peak. Weekdays from 09:00; weekends and public holidays all day. Day, monthly and annual versions exist.
Check current fare →For occasional Switzerland-wide trips, check Half Fare, Saver Day Passes and day-pass options before buying point-to-point at the last minute.
SBB options →If you already have a GA or eligible day pass, check leisure benefits before buying an attraction or mountain package separately.
SBB leisure offers →Usually more relevant for visitors than residents, but useful when guests arrive: local transport plus selected admissions/discounts.
Current benefits →Lindt Home of Chocolate
