Tipping in Switzerland

Service is included. Here is the simple version of what people commonly do in Zurich restaurants, cafés and taxis.

Short version: tipping is not mandatory because service is included. Rounding up is common; around 5–10% can be used for good service.

Restaurants and cafés

For a CHF 47 bill, saying “50, please” is completely normal. With card payments, state the total before the terminal is processed.

Do not import another country’s rules

You do not need a US-style 20% calculation. A gratuity is a gesture, not an automatic surcharge.
