PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONALS

Zurich public transport, without the zone headache

Zurich’s network is excellent; the confusing bit is choosing the right ticket or pass. ZVV has a dedicated newcomer page and app, so we focus on the mental model.

THE SHORT VERSION

Use ZVV locally; learn the few discounts that matter.

Zurich tickets are zone-based and cover trains, trams, buses and many boats within the valid zones/time. The app is easier than memorising the tariff.

The 9 O'Clock Pass is still a thing

It is a ZVV product. Monday–Friday it starts at 09:00 and runs until 05:00 the following day; weekends and general public holidays are unrestricted all day. There are day, monthly and annual versions. It can be a very good fit if you rarely travel in the morning peak.

Day out? Check discounts first

Before buying transport and an attraction separately, check SBB leisure/RailAway offers and benefits attached to the travelcard or day pass you already have.
