PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONALS

Register in Zurich: Anmeldung, permits & first steps

Registration is one of the first things that unlocks the rest of Swiss life. The City of Zurich says newcomers must register with their municipality within 14 days.

The short version

Book a registration appointment with the residents’ office, collect the required identity/residence documents, and make sure you can show or later provide proof of health insurance. If you live outside the City of Zurich, register with your own municipality — not the Zurich city office.

What to bring

The exact list depends on nationality and family situation. Use the City page for the final check, but these are the documents newcomers most often need:

  1. Passport or national IDYour valid identity document.
  2. Proof of your Zurich addressFor example, your lease or other accepted housing evidence.
  3. Civil-status documents, if relevantRequirements vary for married people, families and other situations.
  4. Employment or residence documents, if relevantWhat is needed depends on your nationality and permit route.

Before your appointment, confirm the exact list on the official City registration page.

Health insurance comes right behind it

The Canton states that people moving from abroad normally have three months to arrange compulsory health insurance. You may register before you have the policy, but you must provide proof within the allowed period.
